Three computer strengths are available on play-chess.io — Easy, Medium and Hard — and they differ in how far ahead the chess bot calculates: two, four and six half-moves respectively. Easy also picks at random among moves close to its best, so it drops pieces and gives someone new to the game a real chance to win rather than a scripted one.
Medium suits most people. It takes any piece you leave undefended, sees one-move threats against its own, and finds forced mates — a back-rank mate in one comes back instantly. Hard searches two half-moves deeper again: trading pieces against it rarely goes your way, and it converts basic pawn endings.
There is no level 10 dial and no Elo slider; three settings cover the useful range. The opponent appears the moment you want one — nothing to queue for, nobody abandoning the game on move nine. That is the practical reason to play computer chess.
What the computer is not: the engine has no opening book and no endgame tablebase. It plays sensible developing moves early because its evaluation rewards central squares and piece activity, not because it knows theory. A strong club player will out-manoeuvre Hard in a quiet closed position where planning matters more than calculation.
A reply takes roughly 0.2 seconds at Easy, 0.35 at Medium and 0.9 at Hard, and each level stops at its time budget rather than running away with a hard position. Nothing streams from a server — the wait is your own device thinking.

Chess for 2 players on one device: pass and play
Two players mode shares a single board between two people sitting together: both sides move on the same screen, the engine stays out of it, and the game only enforces whose turn it is. This chess 2 player mode keeps White at the bottom, and Flip board turns the board around so the player with Black gets their own side facing them.
Pass and play chess needs no connection at all, and that is the practical difference from an online game. A train, a plane, a dead spot in the signal — none of it costs you anything.
Chess rules the game enforces, from castling to the fifty-move rule
play-chess.io follows the FIDE Laws of Chess as written, not a simplified subset: castling on both wings (Article 3.8.2), en passant (3.7.3.2), promotion with a free choice of queen, rook, bishop or knight (3.7.3.3), check, checkmate, stalemate, the fifty-move rule (9.3) and draws by insufficient material. Illegal moves do not go through. A pinned knight will not step off the pin, and the board refuses any move that leaves your own king in check.
Castling is the rule toy implementations most often get wrong. Here it is blocked in all four cases the chess rules require: the king has moved, that rook has moved, a square between them is occupied, or the king would start from, cross, or land on an attacked square.
En passant, the rule most apps leave out
A pawn can capture an enemy pawn that has just advanced two squares past it, landing on the square that pawn skipped. That is the en passant chess rule, and Article 3.7.3.2 makes it legal only on the move immediately following the advance — wait one turn and the right is gone for good. play-chess.io offers the capture whenever the position allows it, which is worth testing on any chess game you use: en passant is the first rule a simplified implementation drops.
Two places where this board departs from the Laws
Articles 9.2 and 9.3 make threefold repetition and the fifty-move rule claims: a player has to ask for the draw, and a game can legally continue past either point. play-chess.io detects both and ends the game automatically instead of waiting to be asked, which favours finishing a casual game over arguing about it. A rated game would need the claim mechanism instead.
How the move generator was verified
Correctness here is not a claim to take on trust, because chess has a standard test for it. Perft walks every legal move sequence from a position to a fixed depth and counts the positions it reaches; the reference counts are published, and any error in move generation shows up as a wrong number.

Across those five positions the check covers 410,227 legal move sequences. Forty further games were then played engine against engine to the finish, exercising 27 castlings, 9 promotions and 3 en passant captures with no illegal move and no crash. The payoff is narrow but real: the board will not allow an illegal move, and it will not miss a checkmate.
Chess board setup: where every piece starts
Chess board setup never changes from game to game, and play-chess.io arranges it for you before every one. Each side fills its two nearest rows: rooks in the corners, knights beside them, then bishops, with the king and queen on the two middle squares and pawns in front. The queen starts on her own colour — white queen on a light square, black queen on a dark one — which is the fastest way to check a chess setup before the first move.
Two details catch people out at a physical board: it has to be turned so each player has a light square in their bottom-right corner, or every diagonal comes out mirrored. The king and queen are the pair most often swapped, which is exactly what the queen-on-her-colour check catches.
How to play chess: the pieces, their names and their moves
Chess is played between White and Black on 64 squares. White moves first and has exactly 20 legal opening moves, then each side moves one piece per turn until checkmate: the enemy king attacked with no legal move left to save it. Learning how to play chess is mostly six movement patterns and three special rules; the chess pieces names are pawn, knight, bishop, rook, queen and king.

Castling, en passant and promotion are the three special rules layered on top of those six patterns, and all three are described under chess rules above.
Point values guide trades; they are not a rule of the game. The engine here counts in the same currency, weighing a pawn at 100 centipawns, a knight 320, a bishop 330, a rook 500 and a queen 900 — and it will still hand over a rook for a bishop when the trade forces mate.
