Where to write

Write to [email protected] for anything to do with the site: a bug in the chess board, a rule that behaved unexpectedly, a data request under the privacy policy, or a question these pages do not answer.

play-chess.io is an independent project rather than a company, and registered details are supplied on request to anyone who needs them. There is no phone line and no live chat, so email is the only route in.

What to include in a bug report

A move list makes a chess bug findable in minutes instead of hours, so send it if you can. The move list sits in the panel beside the board on the chess board page and is in standard algebraic notation, which pastes anywhere.

• The moves up to the point where it went wrong, copied from the panel
• What you expected to happen, and what happened instead
• Which mode: computer level, online game, or two players on one device
• Browser and device, roughly — “Safari on an iPhone” is enough

Rule disputes are worth reporting even when you are not certain. One known behaviour looks like a bug and is not: draws by the fifty-move rule and by threefold repetition are declared automatically here, where the FIDE Laws let a player claim them instead. That choice is explained on how the engine is tested.

How long a reply takes

Replies usually go out within a few working days — one person reads this mailbox, so a bug report with a move list moves faster than a vague one. Data requests under the GDPR are answered inside one month, which is the limit the regulation sets rather than a target chosen here.
